Coordinated Reception of Refugees

A community-curated guide by Iranian-Icelandic Community

Services for Refugees

Refugees granted international protection in Iceland receive coordinated services whether they arrived independently or through a government arrangement. Services include Icelandic language and social education, job search support, studies, and vocational training, provided by municipal social services, the Directorate of Labour, and the Icelandic Red Cross (www.raudikrossinn.is).

Right to an Interpreter

You have the right to an interpreter at healthcare appointments, police interviews, and court proceedings. The institution covers the cost; advance notice is usually required. Schools, district commissioner offices, and service centers also provide interpreters.

Opening a Bank Account

A bank account is essential for receiving wages, transfers, and paying bills. To open one you need a kennitala from Registers Iceland (www.skra.is). Banks verify your personal information and the source of your funds. Under-18s may hold accounts with a guardian's permission but cannot take loans.
