Media, Freedom of Speech & Welfare

A community-curated guide by Iranian-Icelandic Community

Media and Free Speech

Everyone has access to media and social media in Iceland. Not all online information is accurate — follow official sources: RÚV (state broadcaster) www.ruv.is, Grapevine (English) www.grapevine.is, Iceland Monitor monitor.is, and government portal www.island.is. Freedom of speech is guaranteed; however, libel, hate speech, and public discrimination are illegal.

Legal Rights and Courts

Fair trials are guaranteed; judges are independent. You have the right to legal counsel during police interrogation. Court interpreters are provided at state expense for non-Icelandic speakers. Icelandic Human Rights Office provides counsel for immigrants. Multicultural and Information Centre: phone 450-3090, www.mcc.is.

Welfare System

Iceland's welfare system is funded through taxation and covers education, health, housing support, medical care, unemployment, and sickness benefits. Old-age pension: 65+ with minimum 3 years' residency. Disability pension: ages 18–67. Over 70 municipalities manage local services: kindergartens, schools, senior services, libraries, and public transport.
