Parenting in Iceland

A community-curated guide by Iranian-Icelandic Community

Key Laws

Corporal punishment is illegal in Iceland under any circumstances — including spanking, slapping, or any form of physical discipline. Children under 13 may not be in public places after 8 PM; teenagers aged 13–16 must be home by 10 PM. These rules apply regardless of cultural background.

Positive Parenting

Icelandic schools strongly value parent-school cooperation. Parents should monitor homework, attend parent-teacher conferences (held twice yearly, interpreters available), and stay connected via the Mentor app (www.mentor.is). Regular outdoor activity and sports clubs are proven to prevent substance abuse in teenagers.

Support Resources

Schools have counselors, psychologists, and specialist teachers available. The Bilingualism Association supports multilingual families: www.modurmal.com. Reykjavík multilingual resources: www.reykjavik.is/allir-med. Reading aloud to children at least 5 times a week in any language supports literacy development.
