Other Important Occasions

Birthdays are widely celebrated. Baptism or naming ceremonies, confirmation at age 14, weddings, and funerals are major family occasions. Iceland has two funeral types: burial and cremation. Same-sex couples can legally marry in Iceland. Freedom of religion is guaranteed by law.

Tip for Families

Set phone reminders for public holidays so children are not accidentally sent to school. Schools also close for Easter week and Christmas break. The academic year runs from late August to mid-June.
