The Mentor System

Mentor Platform

Mentor (www.mentor.is) is the digital platform used by Icelandic primary schools for tracking attendance, submitting homework, monitoring grades, and school communications. Parents can report illness and monitor their child's progress via a mobile app. A digital certificate (Auðkenni) is required to log in.

School Culture

Corporal punishment is prohibited in all Icelandic schools. Bullying is treated seriously with formal response plans. All children are entitled to appropriate education at their local school free of charge. Non-Icelandic-speaking children have a legal right to proper Icelandic language instruction. Special education is available for learning disabilities.

Bilingual Support and School Calendar

Mother tongue is critical for child development — reinforce it from birth. Bilingualism Association: www.modurmal.com. The academic year runs from late August to mid-June, with Christmas and Easter holidays. Parent-teacher conferences are held twice yearly with interpreters available. Primary education is tuition-free; textbooks are borrowed.
