Free Legal Services
The Icelandic Human Rights Office provides free legal counsel for immigrants and residents on rights-related matters. The Multicultural and Information Centre (MCC) also offers advice: phone 450-3090, www.mcc.is. Citizens Advice (Þjónustuver borgarinnar) in Reykjavík assists with a wide range of legal and social questions.
Courts and Legal Rights
Fair trials are guaranteed in Iceland; judges are independent. You have the right to legal counsel during police interrogation. Custody requires judicial approval. Court interpreters are provided at state expense for non-Icelandic speakers. The Legal Aid Fund provides financial assistance for court representation.
District Commissioner (Sýslumaður)
District Commissioners handle many legal matters: marriages, divorces, name changes, property registration, and driving licences. Find your local sýslumaður at www.syslumenn.is. Many services can be handled online through www.island.is.
