Kennitala (National ID)

A community-curated guide by Iranian-Icelandic Community

What is a Kennitala?

The kennitala is Iceland's national identification number, essential for almost everything — banking, healthcare, employment, and renting an apartment. You cannot function in Icelandic society without one.

How to Get One

You receive a kennitala when you register your domicile (lögheimili) at Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá Íslands): www.skra.is. You need a valid residency permit and proof of address.

Format and Uses

The kennitala is a 10-digit number in the format DDMMYY-XXXX. Use it to open a bank account, register with a doctor, get a phone plan, access government services, and more.
