Home-School Co-operation

Parental Involvement
Home-school co-operation is essential in Iceland. Parents should monitor homework, check the Mentor platform and school emails regularly. Reading aloud to children at least 5 times a week in any language builds literacy. Parent associations organize educational meetings; class representatives manage communication via Facebook groups.
After-School Leisure Centers
Leisure centers (frístundaheimili) operate weekdays from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM for grades 1–4, providing a safe environment with light meals and activities (crafts, sports, outdoor play). Extended programs are available for disabled children up to age 18. Registration is online through municipality websites; fees vary by area.
Sports and Activities
Research shows immigrant children participate less in sports, missing important integration and language opportunities. Common sports: football and handball. Other activities: music schools, gymnastics, swimming clubs, dance, and karate. A leisure activities grant (frístundakortin) is available for families to help cover costs.
