Registering with a Doctor

Health Centers
Iceland uses a health center (heilsugæslustöð) system with centers in every area. When you register your domicile at Registers Iceland (www.skra.is), you will be assigned to the health center in your area. Contact the center directly to register as a patient; bring your kennitala and proof of residency.
Online Healthcare Portal
Once registered, access many services online at www.heilsuvera.is: renew prescriptions, book appointments, view blood test results, access doctor certificates, and read your medical history. A digital certificate from Auðkenni (www.audkenni.is) is required to log in securely.
Universal Coverage
Iceland has universal healthcare for all registered residents. Iceland Health Insurance (Sjúkratryggingar Íslands / SÍ) covers treatment with a shared copayment. Refugees and those with international protection have the same rights as other residents. Full details: www.sjukra.is.
