Health Insurance in Iceland
A community-curated guide by Iranian-Icelandic Community
Universal Health Insurance
Iceland Health Insurance (Sjúkratryggingar Íslands / SÍ) provides coverage to all registered residents automatically — no separate application is needed once you have registered your domicile and received your kennitala. Coverage includes doctor visits, specialist referrals, hospital care, and prescriptions. Personal account: www.sjukra.is.
Copayments
Healthcare in Iceland involves a copayment (sjúklingagjald) for most services. Maximum copayments are lower for children, elderly, and disabled individuals. Prescription drug copayments are tiered and reduce as your annual total rises, providing a safety net for those with chronic illness or frequent care needs.
What Is Not Covered
Dental care for adults is mostly not covered (children up to 18 are covered). Cosmetic procedures are not covered. Some physiotherapy may require a GP referral for coverage. For a complete list of covered services: www.sjukra.is.
