Foreign Licences
If you hold a valid driving licence from your home country, you can drive in Iceland immediately. To exchange your foreign licence for an Icelandic one, you need a valid residence certificate from www.skra.is and a doctor's certificate confirming fitness to drive. Contact the Transport Authority: www.samgongustofa.is.
Getting an Icelandic Licence
The driving test age is 17 (lessons can start at 16). A written theory test is required; an interpreter may be used during the written test. After passing the theory test, a practical driving exam with an examiner is required. Licences are issued by District Commissioners (www.syslumenn.is).
Road Rules and Winter Driving
Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Child car seats are required by law up to a certain age and weight. Winter tyres (or all-season tyres) are mandatory in winter; studded tyres are for heavy snow/ice only. Check road conditions at www.road.is. Speed cameras are common throughout Iceland.
