Dental Care

A community-curated guide by Iranian-Icelandic Community

Children's Dental Care

Dental care is free for children up to age 18. The annual copayment is ISK 2,500 (except major surgery). Annual checkups are recommended. SÍ covers a portion of orthodontic costs; 95% coverage for cleft palate and comparable conditions. Children must be registered through the SÍ system or directly at a dentist's office.

Prenatal and Newborn Care

Pregnancy tests are free. An average of 7–10 prenatal visits are recommended; the first should be before week 12. Two standard ultrasounds are offered at weeks 12 and 20. Hospital births are standard; home births with a midwife are available. New mothers are typically discharged the same or next day, followed by 6–7 midwife home visits. Women's ward: 543-3600.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations begin at 3 months of age, following a free medical exam at 6 weeks. Iceland follows the WHO schedule; annual vaccines save 2–3 million lives globally and Iceland has eliminated several diseases through vaccination. The full schedule is provided at your local health center.
