Cohabitation and Marriage
Cohabitation can be registered at Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá). Registered partners may use each other's tax card for deductions. Legal separation requires applying at the District Commissioner's Office; divorce is eligible 6 months after legal separation. Typically joint custody applies when children are involved.
Child Support
When parents live separately, the non-custodial parent pays child support (currently ISK 43,700/month base as of July 2023), covering food, clothing, and housing costs. The Social Security Institution (www.tr.is) can facilitate payments. More information: www.island.is/medlag.
