Friendships and Social Norms
Birthdays are very important in Iceland; check class Facebook parent groups for birthday rules. Children visit friends' homes from a young age. Parents should accompany young children on the first visit and exchange contact details with other parents. Teenagers gather at district leisure centers where staff are present.
Secondary School
Students completing 10th grade qualify for secondary school (3–4 year programs). State schools are free; private schools charge tuition. Four schools particularly serving foreign-origin youth: Tækniskólinn (www.tskoli.is), FÁ (www.fa.is), FB (www.fb.is), Kópavogur College MK (www.mk.is). Student counselors are available at every school.
Universities and Financing
Public universities are free: University of Iceland (www.hi.is), University of Akureyri, Hólar, and Agricultural University. Private universities (Reykjavík University, Bifröst) charge tuition. Iceland Student Loan Fund: www.lin.is. Student housing with affordable apartments: www.studentagardar.is. Minimum grade 5 required for continuation.
