Common Illnesses and Prevention
Young children fall ill frequently while building immunity. Common illnesses include stomach flu, colds, ear infections, and chickenpox. Preschool increases infection exposure. Washing hands and changing clothes after preschool helps prevent spread. Head lice and pinworms are common — treat with pharmacy products and wash all fabrics.
Pediatricians and Specialists
Health centers (heilsugæslustöð) are the first point of contact for children's healthcare. Specialist pediatricians: Domus barnalæknar (phone 563-1010) at Urðahvarfi 8, 203 Kópavogur. The National University Hospital has Barnaspítali Hringsins for complex cases. BUGL provides psychiatric inpatient treatment for children.
Copayments and Prescriptions
Iceland Health Insurance (Sjúkratryggingar Íslands / SÍ) covers treatment with a shared copayment; maximum copayments are lower for children. Refugees have the same rights as other residents. Prescriptions are issued electronically; your kennitala is required at the pharmacy. Personal health portal: www.sjukra.is | www.heilsuvera.is.
