Parental Leave
Since 2021, total parental leave is 12 months. Each parent has an independent right to 6 months; up to 6 weeks can be transferred between parents. Payment is based on prior earnings and labor market participation. Students may qualify if meeting study progress conditions. Non-employed parents receive a modest allowance.
Children's Rights by Age
Age 6: compulsory schooling begins (until 16, 10 years total) · Age 10: may swim alone · Age 12: right to medical consultation, may choose religion · Age 15: legally responsible, independent in welfare cases · Age 16: full medical access, tax obligations · Age 17: driving test · Age 18: full legal adulthood.
Registration and Support
Birth registration is mandatory at the National Registry. A care allowance is available for disabled or chronically ill children from birth to age 18, including respite care and personal assistance. Day parents (dagforeldrar) care for infants 6+ months old with municipal permits and subsidized fees.
