Official Persian Language Classes for Children Launch in Iceland in Collaboration with the Iranian Association and Móðurmál

Official Persian language classes for Iranian-Icelandic children began on 5 September 2026 at Hólabrekkuskóli. The project was launched through the voluntary efforts of members of the Iranian Association in Iceland, with official support from Móðurmál, the mother-tongue education association, and the City of Reykjavík.

The educational programme was established following years of work by Ali Mobli, the initiator of the project, together with a team of volunteer teachers. It currently serves 12 students.

Solmaz Gajavand, the programme’s educational director, explains the teaching approach: “The children are divided into two age groups, 4–6 and 6–9. Our strategy is based on learning through play, storytelling, poetry and weekly worksheets, helping to strengthen the children’s spoken language and cultural connection without creating a heavy academic workload.”

Sima Sadeghi, one of the programme’s teachers, adds, referring to the families’ positive reception: “The first day of classes was filled with nostalgia for the parents and great excitement for the children. Even the shy children gradually became interested in actively participating through drawing and group games.”

Dr. Renata Emilpsen Peskova, president of Móðurmál, also described the initiative as an important step towards preserving children’s identity and rights. She emphasised: “Active bilingualism not only enhances children’s cognitive development, but also turns them into bridges of communication and cultural wealth for the future of Icelandic society.”

Persian language classes are held on Saturdays at Hólabrekkuskóli. Those interested in registering or receiving further information can contact the Iranian Association in Iceland.
